My Father’s Books – currently on display at the Watergate Street Art Gallery, Chester

‘My Father’s Books’ is a series of artworks dedicated to my English teacher father’s literary collection. Dad was an English teacher. MY English teacher!! As a committed bookworm he collected literature all his life. As a child I was curious of his collection and the worlds that lay within. Not having the space for a library, ‘My Father’s Books’ is my attempt to capture the atmosphere of that collection. The well thumbed covers, worn edges and guilty coffee stains are all present as each book is transformed into a swallowtail butterfly. Giclée printed onto 310 gram archival paper each one is painstakingly hand cut and finished before creating the 3 dimensional composition. The butterflies are then encapsulated between two frames. The outer a moulded charcoal or ivory frame and the inner an ivory or charcoal slip frame. These frames were chosen as they bear resemblance to the cases that held the butterfly collections at the Natural History Museum that I visited as a child.
Creating the artworks brings back memories of my own childhood and gives me a sense of well being.

This particular piece is approx 58 cm x 58 cm. It has a distressed ivory frame and a distressed black slip frame. The butterflies are approx 5 cm wide. Classic titles include ‘I Claudius’, ‘War and Peace’, ‘Go Down Moses’ and 22 others. Each butterfly is coated in crushed glass and has a specimen pin inserted. Laid on a textured Fabric Bainbridge mount. This piece is currently exhibited at the Watergate Street Gallery in Chester.
